My Asus Eee 1000HD turn on?

(Asking for a friend)

My Asus Eee 1000HD netbook won't turn on. There's no activity sound at all and even the LED lights remain black. The light on the charger turns on so it's not a power cable problem, and I tried the trick with unplugging, removing the battery, holding the power button on for a minute, then reconnecting. I also tried this with the reset button, and I tried removing and reseating the RAM. I looked at what I could see regarding the motherboard and there was no visible damage from burnout etc, but I know that doesn't mean much.

The very computer-illiterate person I bought it from (for extremely cheap, because it wasn't working) said that it shut down while he was trying to install Windows 7. When it turned off, he turned on again and the LEDs flickered for a while, but after that, it wouldn't give anything at all. Most forums said it would be a quick fix, but now I'm afraid he damaged the motherboard. Obviously, that's way costly, so I want to exhaust all other options first. I know I'd still be getting a good deal either way, but...eep. I'd be paying for labor too, since I know that personally replacing a motherboard on a laptop is out of the question for a silly layman like me, so by the time it's all done, it might cost only slightly less than a new one. :(

Let it charge for a while.

I was hoping this was going to be relationship/sex-filter

Let it charge for a while.

atom based laptops will run without a battery... just to rule out something freakish you might try turning on the laptop without the battery.

Did you actually see LEDs flicker before you bought it? It sounds a lot like you bought a dead laptop. It's possible that there is some problem with the power, either the cord has gone bad (check the wire for crimps) or the power plug adapter in the laptop has gone bad. But, seeing as the previous owner (if they are being truthful) saw it's dying moments, I'm inclined to think that either the motherboard or the cpu failed. If this is so it has nothing to do with a failed install of win7 and the hard drive likely still works. It probably wouldn't be that hard to replace the motherboard (if that's the problem) but I'm not seeing it listed as a part on asus's online store

http://estore.asus.com

so... plus it might not actually be the motherboard.

The good people at eeeuser forums will have an answer for your friend. Also, replacing the guts might not be so bad if you can but another one with a busted screen. There's tutorials with video at eeeuser for taking the entire computer apart. I just read something there about leaving the RAM and battery out for 10 minutes after pressing the reset button. Good luck!

Another thought, have you called ASUS to see if it is still under warranty? Tell them it was a gift and you don't know when or where it was purchased. The customer service people suck but if you can get an RMA and send it in for service they should be able to fix it.
