Acute bronchitis!

Does acute bronchitis causes one to cough blood? or is that symptom is of a more severe sickness?
It definitely can, depending on how hard you are coughing, for one thing. Go to a doctor. If you are coughing blood, that mean some level of wounding in throat or lungs and you're even more open to infection above and beyond the bronchitis.

Dark blood means there's something really wrong, small bits of fresh blood means you probably tore something in your upper airways.

Yes it can be bronchitis, but it can be a lot of things. At the very least it sounds like you've got a nasty chest that you probably should take to the doctor.

Do you mean that you've already been diagnosed with bronchitis and are trying to see if this is a sign of a more serious illness? If so, give the doctor who diagnosed you a call; the office will probably be closed today, but there will be a phone number on the automated message that you can call, and someone will call you back.

Yes, acute bronchitis is the most common cause of coughing blood.

I coughed up blood when I had bronchitis. It looked fresh and it was no more than I would get by biting my tongue hard. I'd go to a doctor as soon as possible.

Yes, but so can a blood clot in your lung that can kill you. So at the very least call the doctor and report your symptoms. If it were me, I'd be in the ER right about now.

I was coughing blood at one point, and it turned out to be from damage to my throat from coughing. So don't freak out, but do see your doctor.

Response by poster: Thanks for the answer guys .. And just wondering what is the expected duration for one to cure from a let's say severe acute bronchitis? And is it okay to smoke after that?

Speak with your doctor.
And is it okay to smoke after that?
NO. STOP SMOKING. Your bronchitis -- if that's what it is -- is much more likely to recur or not get better when you're smoking (smokers get "chronic bronchitis"). You're coughing up blood and you want to go back to smoking? Why not see this as a sign to quit, plus a New Year's resolution?
You do, of course, realize that coughing up blood can also be a sign of lung cancer, which you're also at increased risk for from smoking, riiight?
