Is there any program that works with a hp expresscard tv tuner that isnt windows media centre ?

I know its naive of me, buying a tv tuner card for a hp pavillion notebook and actually expecting to watch tv on it. Im in the uk and have tried for years to get this to work without success. is there no program out there that can use the tuner apart from the woeful windows one, which doesnt work ?

My tuner came with catalyst media center, which works for me (but mine's an ati one).

But I think you should address why windows media center 'doesn't work'. I've found it to be a great program (except that my tuner does not publish the appropriate driver past windows XP so I can't use it). Is it a driver issue? A not having WMC installed issue? You say you wanted to "buy a tuner card...actually expecting to watch TV on it". Well, HP expects you to use WMC, so I would say that this problem is definitely on your end. I also feel like I'm making no sense, so I'll shut up noe.

Response by poster: the tuner card came with the hp laptop as did windows media center - to me it seems bizarre that there is no other program out there that can use the tuner card.
Windows media center does not work for me.

Sgt,

Why does Windows Media Center not work for you? What happens when you try to get it to work?

Response by poster: well, it says there is no signal from the arial - and then you see a black screen with snippets of sound from the channel -so it does pick up something.

I wondered that as media centre is bloatware, which even requires your zip/post code before it operates, that possibly someone had a simpler, freeware solution out there.

Ah. Ironically enough, I work on MCE at Microsoft. So hopefully I can help you - though I don't have a lot of experience with UK TV signals.

Well, I can tell you why it needs the zip/post code - when it goes through the TV First Run, it takes that info and then feeds you the various cable options for your area. I don't have my MCE machines in front of me right now, but I'm thinking that you're selecting the 'Yes, please select a TV signal for me' option when going through First Run. It may be getting incomplete channels.

Some ideas:

1. Have you tried picking the 'No, let me select my options manually' option? Then, select 'Antenna' and go from there. You might even have to add the TV channels manually.

2. Another cause for an incomplete signal from a TV tuner is loose connections. Make sure the card is seated securely in the computer. I have found from my experience that cards like this are notoriously fussy, and if you even glance at it, it'll lose your TV signal.

Good luck!

And I didn't mean to post this twice; I was trying to edit the original comment and it reposted it instead.
