NYE in Mt. Lassen, or Joe vs. the Volcano 2010

How to spend NYE in Redding, CA? More generally, what are great local, non-chain places to eat at in Redding, Mt. Lassen, and the Shasta Lake region? Any nice, "fine dining" options for NYE, or are we looking at just burgers and barbecue and the like? Good food more important than atmosphere, although if there's a suggestion for a nice romantic restaurant, I'm all ears. Also let me know if there's some trail or some sight or some activity we must do in the area. We'll be there from Dec. 29 to January 2nd and staying at a hotel in Redding. Thanks!

Have you checked Yelp? This reviewer who grew up in Redding is extraordinarily prolific, and has a list of places she recommends. I met her when I lived in Sacramento. She's a really nice person, and I know her reviews are trustworthy!

Best answer: Geez. I grew up in Redding and your question is kinda sorta one of the reasons I left. And haven't been back, save for a few brief visits, in 20 years.

This other Yelp page suggests the place hasn't changed much.

Your best bet is to ask the concierge/clerk at the hotel. When I call my folks tomorrow for Christmas, I'll ask and report my findings.

As for the rest of your question...

Be sure to take the Shasta Dam tour. If you time it right, you'll be the only one(s) on the tour, and may get the super special tour.

If you like driving winding mountain roads, 299 between Redding and Weaverville is a kick.

Castle Crags, North of Lake Shasta is a decent hiking spot, depending on the weather (snowed in by now?).

They recently built a pedestrian bridge and park on the river near the convention center (Turtle Bay). A nice stroll, which can be extended into a long walk along the river.

Friends of mine had summer jobs as tour guides at Lake Shasta Caverns.

If I knew you better, I'd share all the best places for bonfire parties and some secret make out spots and a couple of good BMX trails and the location of a sizeable stash of gas caps stolen from cars parked out in front of the Bella Vista Tavern in the summer of '80.

This is the Sundial Bridge! It's definitely worth a visit.

Response by poster: Thanks for all the suggestions, particularly to notyou! Would love to hear any other tips that you might have. I wish I knew you better. We would love to know some secret make out spots, and that gas cap collection sounds interesting.

I've also bookmarked that Yelp page, and searched through Chowhound best I could. Seems like Trinity Cafe, Vivify, Sengthong's, and Billy Goat's Tavern might be on the list. But with many trails snowed over, we're trying to figure out what to do and see in Lassen and Shasta. Maybe we should just buy champagne and stay in for NYE.
