PuppysocializationFilter: Im looking to socialize my 8 week old German shepherd by taking her to as many places as i can that allow dogs. I live in Sachse, Tx which is just outside of Dallas. Can you please tell me what stores/restaurants/etc...are dog friendly in the DFW/Sachse area?

Maybe a little TOO obvious, but there is a Petsmart near the Target at GB Turnpike and North Garland, and a PetCo near the Best Buy just a little ways east of there.

I'm not in your area.. but I second the petsmart suggestion... also, sign up for the petsmart puppy training class, your new pup will get to meet other dogs and people.

In my neck of the woods, bars that don't serve food let dogs in. I'll admit to taking a break from a rainy dog walk with a beer.

It's not a place of business, but for pure volume of contact, you're probably not going to beat the White Rock Dog Park.

I haven't checked it out myself, but there's an indoor dog park on I-30 in east Dallas. There's some additional helpful information in this Yelp forum post, which points to a lengthy list in the DMN.

DogFriendly.com compiles information like this by state and by city. Some of it's obvious or not useful to you, but you might find a couple gems in there. It's worth a look.

Please note that you shouldn't take your dog to places where there are strange dogs until he's finished his rounds of puppy shots. Typically it's best to wait until they're four months.

Go to the regular park too, especially when it is super busy. Puppies are magnets for little kids, and having your dog on leash and under control when there are lots of little kids who want to pet and hug it is important. It's a lot easier to do this when it's a puppy and easier to handle. Just be really diligent about scooping poop, always bring three more bags than you think you'll need.

I've found that a lot of smaller Mom & Pop type businesses are dog friendly, a lot of them even have a "shop dog". Next time you are in one of these stores just casually ask if you can bring your dog in next time.

I know it is the wrong season, but I take my dog to the Farmer's Market. All kinds of exciting people and smells there! Are there any local Holiday Fairs going on? Anything outside will most likely allow your dog.

Any place that serves or sells food will not be dog friendly, but a place with an outdoor patio may be more lenient. Again, next time you go just ask.

I take my dog to go pick up my kids from school. (This only works if you actually have kids!) I started off by waiting off campus and letting her get used to all the kids walking by. Once I knew she was okay with everything going on I slowly started moving closer to the school. I am always very aware of her body language, and if she ever seemed stressed I would get right out of there (I've never had to, she is always really relaxed but I still watch.) Really she loves the all the kids and gets excited to see them. She sits very nicely for the ones who want to pet her, but gets a little overexcited when she sees 'her' kids (my kids.) That's when she starts whining and wiggling, like she just can't sit still when she sees her kids!

The animal shelter where I volunteer has this audio CD with lots of noise (firetruck, horns, thundering, etc) to help puppies get used to them. Probably not what you are looking for but I thought you might be interested. Good luck.

The Barnes & Noble's in downtown Fort Worth lets a dog training school take their dogs up and down the elevators, perhaps you could call one in your area to see if they allow dogs too.

I have found the White Rock park a bit overwhelming for newbie dogs (or newbie owners) if they haven't quite gotten the hang of socializing with other dogs (and their owners).

If you're just looking to stroll around, the Uptown area is a great place to walk your dog and meet other canine pedestrians. Also, how about the Farmer's Market? Fair Park? Those places would get my vote too.

Most Home Depot and Lowes stores are dog-friendly. For some reason, many motorcycle shops are, too.

It's against the law in most cities (Dallas surely included), not to mention obtuse, to take a dog into a restaurant.

Lee Harvey's! I don't even have a dog, but I love this place and always feel like an outsider when I'm the only person without one. Good food, good music, good beer, outdoor fireplace.
