I have a 1994 Grand Cherokee with a 318 and NP249 transfer case that needs to be replaced as the chain is beginning to slip. I'm thinking about putting in an NP242 as a replacement. Does anyone know if this would be a direct swap, and if not, what is involved?

One site says:
"Yes the NP242 transfer case is a good swap, all u half to really do is swap the front output shaft out of the NP249 (Quadr-Trac) and put it into the NP242. and u will also need to swap the selector shaft and and the bexel for the gears. it is a relatively easy swap for a person who knows their way around a tool box. u could also Call George Kepplein at Transfer Case unlimited, he makes rebuilt NP242 that are an exact bolt on, it comes with everything, for around $1000 (don't know the exact price). "
I have a Landcruiser, so beats me.
