Question: I would like to covert the .shn shows to .mp3.

I just rediscovered the greatness of the Live Music Archive and would like to covert the .shn shows to .mp3, so they will play on an iPod (the FAQ implies this is OK as long as they are not uploaded or distributed). Are there any freeware (XP) programs that can batch process these files? Bonus points if there is a program that can also add converted files to iTunes.

I used to go mkw or flac frontend to wav, eac with lame plugin to mp3, but I just recently discovered dbpoweramp. It requires you to download the codecs seperately, but it does it from within the program, and once you're set up, it does very easy conversions in one step from an explorer context menu. You can also get a codec to convert to AAC/M4A (I use the Nero codec with "extreme" setting.)

I use xACT on OS X to convert SHN and FLAC to AIFF, and convert AIFF to Apple Lossless in iTunes.

I really wish I could be of more help, since I d/led about 20 shows from archive.org for my father and me last year and managed to convert them all to .mp3 and burn them. I really don't recall which program I used, though. Be sure and note, though, that some shows are available straight from the d/l as .mp3's. Also, definitely trust the reviews. They've never done me wrong.

That said, whatever it was I used (and again, many apologies for not recalling whatever it was) it didn't require a .wav step. It was straight download/expand/convert/burn. Too many steps for my taste, but one less than muckster's.

No no-- dbpoweramp doesn't require a wav step: download > convert > tag > add to your media library (I use winamp with mlipod) > transfer to ipod.

If you're into CDs, Nero can burn audio straight fom shn or flac files.
