Does it appear in Apple System Profiler? (Apple menu > About This Mac > More Info)

Are you running OS X 10.3.7 and the latest version of iPhoto/Image Capture? Every new version supports a dozen new cameras/USB devices.

As for the OS 9 version, did you actually boot into OS 9, or just use Classic? That sketchy beta driver says it works through Classic but that's the kind of claim I'd tend not to believe since Classic has less direct hardware access than a "real" OS 9 boot.

Response by poster: It appears in the system profiler as "digital camera", product ID is given as 4097 ($1001). (Whatever that means.)

I used a machine running OS 9 only for attempting to get the driver to work. Elsewhere, I'm running 10.3.

Every new version supports a dozen new cameras/USB devices.

I feel the problem may be that the camera is too old rather than too new. All thanks, however.
