Are there any good resources that explain the logistics, equipment and practices of television broadcast production of the 1950's?

There are books from the period that discuss it in some detail, but unfortunately I can't suggest any by name. Maybe Google Books could help you track down some likely-looking titles?

I know you specifically mention the 1950's, but since you are not getting flooded by answers, and assuming you are interested in TV production, I will suggest The Making of Star Trek by Stephen Whitfield. And, no, you don't need to be a trekkie at all. It is a fascinating book about the production of the Original Series, and I believe you will find it quite interesting.
