get me an 8th or you're fired!

Job Emergency Question: a friend of mine works at a local bakery/cafe and the manager got wind that my friend sells weed on the side (not at his job, though). Apparently the manager told him yesterday that if he didn't give the manager an 8th, he would lose his job. Is there any way to contact the corporate office and report this to some kind of HR manager? This HAS to be illegal or against the rules, right?

That's all I know at this point, but my initial advice was to tell him to just report the guy to human resources and deny anything else. Nothing good could possibly come from actually giving this manager drugs.

Well, yes, it is illegal and against the rules, but so is selling weed. What precisely do you plan on telling Corporate?

IANAL, but in the absence of evidence its the managers word against the employees. I am not sure this will shake out well for either of them if any accusations are made about the manager or the employee. Maybe everyone should just agree it didn't happen and move on with life?

I'm fairly sure blackmail is illegal, but so is selling weed.

In many states the penalties for blackmail are more serious than those for possession. So going to the police is an option. Your friend would of course still lose his job.

Deny, deny, deny. And if the guy persists, report him. Presumably the manager doesn't have hard evidence that your friend is selling weed?

Which, his job selling weed, or his job selling baked goods?

Response by poster: the second one.

Best answer: The fact he is/was selling weed is irrelevant. At this point, it's wrongful termination. Contact the labor board. If he doesn't want it dragged out that he was indeed selling weed, then think twice about it.

But think of it this way: If he hadn't been selling weed, and the manager had made the exact same demand, what would you have done? Get pissed off, right? Same thing.
