roll of the dice

Have you ever posted a job listing to dice.com? Is it worth it?

I've used the site before as a job seeker and know that they have high quality jobs, but I was surprised to learn that they charge $400 per listing. If you've used it before, did you think it was worth the fee?

What's the job? I find that coder jobs generate a flood of "meh" resumes that all look the same. If time-to-hire is a critical driver for you and you simply need someone who's Competent, you can probably find a warm body quickly.

I've actually had better luck hiring on niche job boards that specifically target the person you're looking for- fewer resumes, but they'll be much more interesting and relevant to you.

Also: MeFi jobs and meetups.

Best answer: It was several years ago, so the situation may be different now, but when I posted to Dice once (and only once) in an effort to make an end-run around my glacially slow megacorporate HR process it generated a total wall of garbage responses almost as bad as putting up a Craigslist posting. Plus it got my name on some kind of recruiter solicitation list that got passed around. It consumed a lot of my time to sort through the piles of trash, and it took years to get recruiters to stop cold-calling me.

I wouldn't use Dice again.

I don't know about posting, but what about searching the resumes? As a seeker, I never even bother searching the listings there, but almost all my leads come from people seeing my resume on Dice and contacting me.

Best answer: As a former HR person who spent a lot of time on recruiting for technical positions I can tell you that personally, I hate dice. The resumes all looked the same, the site (this was a few years ago) was annoying to navigate, it was more expensive and less useful for recruiting in my physical area (relocating always got people excited but in reality was never successful) and the salespeople that called to get us to sign up were INCREDIBLY annoying. Eventually I cancelled our account and would immediately hang up on anyone who called from them. I would never go back.

On the other hand, we were never a company that really needed to search resumes so it might be worth it in that regard.
