Here Comes Another Song

"Here Comes the Sun" by The Beatles, "Here Comes Your Man" by the Pixies, "Here Comes My Baby" by Cat Stevens. Besides the name, these songs have some similar musical qualities. Any other songs fit (even if the name doesn't)?

Other songs I think that fit: "Pink Moon" by Nick Drake, "Big Yellow Taxi" by Joni Mitchell, and "Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard" by Paul Simon (can't find a good recording). I want a theoretical mix tape of songs that feel like these ones.

Could you help us out by describing what qualities all these songs share?
You might like Oxford Comma by Vampire Weekend, or I'm a Cuckoo by Belle and Sebastian.

I can't think of any specific songs offhand, but if you're in the States, you can take advantage of Pandora's music-match algorithms.

Can you take a stab at defining what you think these songs have in common? Big Yellow Taxi and Me and Julio have, to my ear, a similar loping acoustic guitar feel. This site says they're both three chord, "easy" songs, but they seem to use different chords when I Google for tab sites.

(Am SO not a musician.)

Response by poster: I thought about trying to write down their musical similarities, but it came down to more of a feeling than actual aspects. But let me give it a better try:

To me, they all sound fairly quick, light hearted (or, if they are a little sadder they don't revel in sounding sad), aren't that musically complicated (even if they do have many layers, something about them doesn't sound like they do), and they all seem to have a catchy picking or piano thing.

But of course this is super subjective and could be applied to tons of songs, some of which I'm sure I hate. I do like that Belle and Sebastian song, which gives me hope this thread can still work! But I would say that I prefer the lyrics to not feel that clever or worked on, in a sense.

If by similar musical qualities you mean, like, a floaty, bouncy, but somewhat muted tunefulness, I'd add:

"Here She Comes Now," Galaxie 500 (cover of the Velvet Underground song)
"Who Loves the Sun," VU
"I Want You," Bob Dylan
"Drink to Me Babe, Then," AC Newman
"September Gurls," Big Star
Almost anything by the Elephant 6 popsters: Beulah, Apples in Stereo, Of Montreal
"Parentheses," The Blow
"Evergreen," The Fiery Furnaces
"Black and White," The DB's
"Oliver's Army," Elvis Costello
"We Love You Carol and Alison," Game Theory
"I am a Scientist," Guided by Voices
"Queen of Eyes," The Soft Boys
"Our Time," Imperial Teen
"Vapours" (or almost anything else), Islands
"Picture Book," the Kinks
"Why I Write Such Good Songs," Kleenex Girl Wonder
"Nothing to Be Done," The Legends
"Cynical Girl," Marshall Crenshaw
"Before We Arrive," The Meligrove Band
"With a Gun," The Minus 5
"I Wanna Take You Out in Your Holiday Sweater," Pas/Cal
"Shady Lane," Pavement
"Adventures Close to Home," The Raincoats
"Another Bubble," and many, many others by Robyn Hitchcock
The Shins pretty much do nothing else
"Post-Paint Boy," Stephen Malkmus

Of course, only one of those is a "here...comes" song. I've got more of those that don't fit your musical requirements as nicely, if that's more what you want.

Sun King? Though it's not the same unless you let it go on into Mean Mr. Mustard and the rest.

As far as I can tell, you're looking for Wes Anderson movie soundtrack music. Try These Days, Stephanie Says, I Am Waiting.

Here are a few songs that I can think of right now:

The Jayhawks - "Stumbling Through the Dark" and "Save it for a Rainy Day"

Laura Cantrell - "14th Street" (mp3 available for free from her official site)

Kings of Convenience - "I Don't Know What I Can Save You From" (live performance video on that page; there's also an electronic remix version by Röyksopp)

Rosie Thomas - "2 Dollar Shoes" and "I Play Music" (you can download mp3s of these songs for free from her Subpop label page -- look under the "Listen" header)

Travis - "Flowers in the Window" (play the Flash audio in the top right rather than the YT video -- it's a much better recording/representation)

Belle and Sebastian (again) - "Another Sunny Day"

Belle & Sebastian - "She's Losing It"
The Velvet Underground - "Pale Blue Eyes"

Laura Cantrell's "Churches off the Interstate" (more up-tempo compared to "14th Street") might be a candidate for you as well. It's also available for free from her site (same link as in my first comment -- look near the bottom of the page).

The Fiery Furnaces - "Here Comes the Summer"

I was going to list more, because I thought I had a handle on what you were looking for, but then I got confused by what you marked as best answers. (Not that I don't love me some Van Morrison and Brian Eno.)

Assuming you're looking for melodically-upbeat, guitar-driven, folkish stuff, here's a smattering that caught my attention just from clicking around in iTunes for a few minutes:

"Neapolitan Bridesmaid," by Tarkio
"Tall Green Grass," by Cory Branan
"Hey Julie," by Fountains of Wayne
"The New Love Song," by Joshua James
"Gone For Good," by The Shins
"Packing Blankets," by Eels
"Tinfoil Hats," by Rocky Votolato
"If She Wants Me," by Belle and Sebastian

Hope one or more is appealing. :)
