I'm looking for an email notifications module for a Wordpress installation that manages news releases at my job.

I'd like a module that allows list of subscribers to be emailed when a new release is posted. It should also allow for self-subscription and also for subscription to specific categories). I'd also like to be able to control whether or not people are emailed so that they won't get a new email if I change a comma.

Any ideas? Am I asking for too much?

Feedburner is an RSS-syndication service but has the ability to send out e-mail messages. It is done in a daily digest, sent once per day in a two hour window, so I'm not sure if your needs are more time sensitive than that. But for what it is worth, the service works great, is pretty easy to setup with Wordpress, and is free.

I use the e-mail subscription feature on one of my blogs.

Best answer: My wife has been using Subscribe2 on her blog, and it has worked pretty well. It only emails when a post is published, so edits don't generate a message, unless you switch the message back to draft and then publish it again.

There is also MailPress, which I have less experience with.

Subscribe2 allows people to subscribe to updates without getting entangled in the wordpress user database. They'll receive whatever categories you configure for email notification. If you allow people to register on your wordpress installation then registered users can control their own category preferences. Mailpress requires that you allow user registration because only registered users can subscribe.

MailPress will do many, but not all, of these things.
