Help Me Recall a Scary Movie

[Moviefilter] Any ideas on the name of this scary movie from my youth?
So I remember being really scared watching a movie on TV when I was a young fella (late 70's/early 80's). The memory of the emotion is really there, but I don't have much memory of the movie itself (memory is strange, eh?) This movie probably wouldn't be all that scary today.
I have a vague idea that it was about a group of people in a desert-like valley, the group shrinking, and there was some demonic force involved. Only the end really sticks with me. The lone (?) survivor is being restrained and taken off to an asylum, and he's screaming for someone to give him back his cross. "Gimme my cross! Please!" A nurse (dressed in say 50's/60's style) turns to the camera and seems to be a young blonde woman who disappeared earlier, and she gives an evil smile.
