What is the biggest flat open field open to the public in the East Bay (closer to Montclair the better)
Looking for the best spot to fly small electic rc planes.

Best answer: I have seen lots of people out flying their rc planes here at the shoreline. It's not really perfectly flat and kind of shrubby though.

Response by poster: The Caldecott field looks like a good spot, have to check out how busy it is, and the shoreline looks good to albeit a bit far.

Best answer: How about the old airfields on Alameda? Paved, not grass, if that works. It may be fenced off, but there are some huge parking lots south of Tower that should be accessible.

Seconding the big airfields in Alameda, on the old base there. Mythbusters films a lot of stuff out there. Not beautiful, but HUGE.

For insurance / liability purposes, you may need to be a member of the organization to use the field. When I just showed up at my local club's field one day (weekday) someone was there and shooed me off to go get the membership. An hour later I'd done it (online) and was back.
I managed to get about 2 minutes of flight out of my brand new aircraft (newbie trainer model) before it had a mildly rough landing and then I couldn't get it to fly anymore. RC aircrafts suck.
