How do I Jailbreak from a 3.1 iPhone 3G?

My S.O. thought she was doing me a favor by updating my iPhone 3G to 3.1 while I was mowing the lawn (and while she updated hers).

So I lost my Jailbreak. I'm not too concerned with the Soft Unlock, as much as I am getting Cydia back. To be honest, I am happier with my carrier (T-Mobile in Germany) and have no use for the unlock.

I am running Vista, so Pawnage Tool is no use to me.

Um, you are kinda screwed as I understand it. Pwnage is the only jailbreak available thus far and I think you can't downgrade to 3.0.

lackutrol's comment is confirmed. The Dev Team has yet to release a jb tool for 3.1 that runs on Windows. There will be one soon, but for now you're going to have to find a friend with a mac if you want to get cydia back. Good luck!

iPhone Download Blog has a guide on downgrading from 3.1 to 3.0, after which you should be able to re-jailbreak as before.

FWIW: You can only downgrade if you have a 3.0 ECID SHSH on file with cydia and fake out your hosts file to point to cydia's cert server instead of Apple's.

Response by poster: Yeah.... I have no idea how I would have done that. Plus, the article assumes you have a 3GS, not a 3G.

Guess I'm screwed.

I have read of this working with 3.1 official updated phones but I have only used this method to go from 3.01 JB to 3.1 JB PLUS it involves trusting random files from the internet, so please don't blame me if/when your iphone ends up dead or in a spambot net or some other malady but if you, like the friend i helped, are set on having it jailbroken :

You can download "custom firmware" files already jailbroken on someone else's Mac and apply them to your phone by clicking the restore button in itunes 9.0 while having the Shift key pressed. This will open a file selection dialog where you can select the ipws file you downloaded.

After a while you will end up with a "new" (but jailbroken) 3.1 device with cydia that you can then proceed to restore from your backup to regain all your info and AppStore apps.

Also, this is probably not of much use to you right now, but aptbackup is very useful for this cases, you just run it after installing all your cydia apps and the list will be backed up along all your info in itunes for easy restore after a wipe.
