I'm trying to win an internet pissing contest with my dad.

What is the font on this "Durham Fair" logo?
Best answer: It's Ziggurat by the venerable Hoefler & Frere-Jones type foundry.
P.S. The "un-warped" version isn't, exactly, unwarped. It's been squashed horizontally, which is no way to treat a well-crafted font. For shame, Durham.

Response by poster: Thanks for the tip on What the Font, it's not finding anything, but it's really cool!

Best answer: I don't think it's Ziggarat, because of the missing serifs at the top of the uppercase A and the assymetry of the uppercase A.
My guess is that it's Playbill or a cheap knockoff of it.

Response by poster: Thanks, martens. Sorry, we hicks in Durham don't know much about typography. As to the results of the internet pissing contest, Metafilter has beaten Aardvark for quickest answer. Good job, everybody!

Ah, I think you're right, MegoSteve. My mind jumped to fancy-$100-designer-font before installed-on-ever-Mac-font, which is probably a poor decision.
But if you want to use a Playbill-esque font for something, Ziggurat the nicest variety.

The more I look at it, the more I think that there are two fonts at play here. I don't think a stretched Playbill would look as nice in a circle as your first logo example is.
I'd browse My Fonts and look for "Slab Serif" and see if you can find a good match.

My sister went to the Durham Fair yesterday. I asked her how it was and she said, "We saw... livestock."
