B&B in Montreal (The Plateau)

Looking for reasonably-priced bed and breakfast in Montreal, preferably in The Plateau.

Turtlegirl and I are looking for a weekend get-away to celebrate our 7th anniversary. Some friends who live in Montreal suggested The Plateau but do not have a recommendation for a specific B&B in the neighbourhood. Looking for recommendations for reasonably-priced places that are clean. First-hand experience preferred, and not just a list of places, please Thanks!.

When we went, we took the advice of this Ask answer and stayed at Les Bons Matins. I don't know if it's in the Plateau (I don't even recall a neighborhood with that name), but it was a block from a Metro stop downtown and a short cab ride from anything else. The people were lovely and it was cheap and with great breakfast. Highly recommended.

I stayed here a few years ago. The host is quirky but kind and a fabulous cook (he serves a 3 course breakfast). The place is clean, although it has a lived in look. It's like staying at a friend's place, but in a comfortable bed, with a friend who doesn't expect you to stick around. The host is more than happy to chat in the mornings and give you feedback on questions about the area (which he knows very well), but he doesn't push or pry. We thought is was really well priced, and hugely enjoyed our one-week stay. We'll stay there again if/when we go back to Montreal.

I agree with your friends-- stay in the Plateau. Les Bons Matins is not in the Plateau, but it looks nice. I pass by this B&B all the time-- the location is just about perfect-- heart of the Plateau. We think that we stayed here about 5 years ago, but can't quite remember. About 2 years ago, we stayed here while we were apartment hunting. A little bigger than a B&B, but still includes breakfast. Definitely centrally located, on the edge of the Plateau and very nice. They also have free parking if that's important to you.

Oh! Sorry I'm late! About a month ago, my wife and I stayed at Le Gite, at 3619 De Bullion, and loved it. It wasn't crazy cheap (CAD$113 after taxes), but the room (the "yellow" room, IIRC) was literally breathtaking -- about 15' x 25', I'd venture, with a king-sized bed, amazing art on the walls, hardwood floor, and a little desk. Free wireless Internet, and a location smack-dab in the middle of the Plateau about a 5-minute walk from the Sherbrooke metro stop and at the corner of Prince-Arthur, a cobblestone foot-traffic-only street chock-a-block with restaurants, bars, and stuff. You're exactly midway between St-Denis and St-Laurent, which are the two best touristy streets in the city (touristy in a good way -- shops, cafés and restaurants, not in a bad tacky $10 t-shirt sort of way).

Breakfast was great (crêpes and strawberries); the people running the place were filling in for the owners who were on vacation, so I can't really speak to the quality of the regular proprietors or their breakfasts. You will have to share a bathroom; my wife was a bit perturbed to finish showering and leave the bathroom in the morning to find a surly Italian in the hall glowering at her and saying something (presumably in Italian) under his breath. Other than that minor wrinkle, it was a wholly positive experience.
