Do you know of any free software packages (for the Mac) that have the same or similar functionality to Pear Note?

Seems unlikely, but Pear Note looks to me like it's worth $40.

Product summary from the website:
Pear Note records audio and/or video while you take your notes, so later you can find what was being said when you typed something. You can play back an entire recording, or jump straight to the point you need.
For a simple solution, get an audio recording program (or external recorder) and start recording when you start typing. Make a note of the time when you type every 5 to 15 minutes (depending on how accurate you want to be). If you don't want to watch the clock too closely, find a program that will make a sound every so often, so you can add a timestamp without losing focus on the topic at hand.

If you really want something more accurate than this, Pear Note looks like a (relatively) inexpensive solution.
