Please recommend a good auto mechanic in Tempe, AZ for a 2001 Ford Escape.

I don't have personal knowledge of a mechanic in Tempe, but Car Talk's Mechanics Files is a good place to find one.

Bryan's Auto Service is a bit further out in Mesa, but Greg there, who owns it, is a great guy and very trustworthy and has taken care of many an issue in many of our vehicles.
