What are the very best tower defense games?

OMIGOD, "Plants vs. Zombies" is fun. Help me find more tower defense games that are as much fun.

I've never really gotten into the tower defense genre, but on a whim I downloaded "Plants vs. Zombies" from Big Fish Games, and I am beyond hooked. It's pure fun, lots of variety, just utterly addictive. Just a day after starting it, I'm almost finished with it.

So, what are some other tower defense games that rise above mediocre to this level of greatness?

BONUS POINTS if your suggestions are available from Big Fish, as I have some game credits from them.

Desktop Tower Defense is one of my faves.

Desktop Tower Defense was the first tower defense game to really get me hooked on the genre.

If you have an IPhone This top 10 list may be worth investigating.

I assume you've seen GemCraft (previously on the blue) and its prequel GemCraft Chapter 0: Gem of Eternity (also previously on the blue)? They're flash-based, and I don't think they are downloadable, but my God they're addictive. Weeks of my life, people, weeks.

(It's basically fantasy RPG tower defense, with skill allotments and spells and character levels and all kinds of things.)

Also, this post on the blue links to TowerDefence.net, which looks promising. Haven't tried any of those, though.

If you have a DS, you can get Ninja Town. It's really fun and silly, and the challenges can get pretty intense.

I'm strangely in love with Bloons Tower Defense. Pop pop pop pop pop...

Also, you may want to look at Defense Grid. It's a TD game with fancy-pants graphics (though the PC interface is a little mushy, I think the controls were designed for Xbox360.)

Most of the tower defense games listed on the TowerDefence web site are thoroughly mediocre, but if you sort by rating you get a fairly accurate list of the best games of the genre. I'd second the suggestion of GemCraft, it's really well done. Recently I've also enjoyed tree tower defense.

I found Defense Grid flashy but far too easy (then again, I had the same complaint about Plants vs Zombies).

Gemcraft 0 is a filthy monster of a game that will suck your will to live. Stick to Gemcraft and you'll be golden.

I'll add my vote also to Bloons Tower Defense and Desktop Tower Defense.

However, there's very little out there as good as Plants vs. Zombies. It's pretty much the pinnacle of the genre.

I have a couple TD games on my G1 phone, Spiral TD, Robo Defense, and Retro Defense, picked up all 3, Robo Defense is classic TD and fun.

I really liked Corpse Craft, which is part of Whirled. I'm not sure the first link will work without an account (free), but if it doesn't, go to whirled.com and then 'games' and it'll likely be listed on the first page.

Desktop and Bloons 3 are both great. My absolute favorite now though is The Space Game Missions.

This is pretty typical of me - starting with the best, then struggling to find something else. Did that with Bioshock and Half-Life 2, and now all other FPS games are disappointments.

Whiteboard Tower Defense
270: White House Defense
Viking Tower Defense
Warzone Tower Defense
Canyon Defense
Protector (plan a lot of time for this one)
Madness Combat Defense
VR Defender Y3K and the similar Vector TD

And here's a list of 125 more, none of which I will vouch for. The above list, however, will suck your soul.

PVZ is pretty much the goldstandard but man if Gemcraft didn't suck me in like nothing else. Days just *vanished*. I also like Vector Tower Defense but I have a sneaking suspicion it's unwinnable.
