Old Chicago novel

Trying to identify a Chicago novel I read way back in the 50s or 60s. It is about a veteran (WWII or Korea) who spends his nights walking the streets of the Near North Side and always ends up in an all night coffee shop peopled by bums, alcoholics, writers and bohemians. Not Algren, Farrell or Studs Terkel. Please help.
