what was the best birthday party you've ever had or been to?

what was the most fun (and/or meaningful) birthday event you've attended--either yours or someone else's?

A friend of mine who was very into games and puzzles used to stage elaborate scavenger hunts for his birthday parties. Of course they were tailored to his interests and those of his guests, and the guests would collaborate to solve them. They were immensely fun.

I would not be surprised if we knew some of the same people, fermion.

The best birthday party I ever went to was the one where I broke the piƱata. That was a good day.

Mine was also an elaborate scavenger hunt. It was a Polaroid style hunt (now you'd use digital cameras) where each team had to document themselves doing a series of wacky tasks (protesting something was the main one I remember). The final item on the list was to prepare a dish for the other team (within some wacky parameter I can't now remember), so when we all got together to compare photos and laugh we ate the foods we'd made. I believe the host had also prepared a bunch of deserts in advance too.

Some of my favorites:

1) For my husband's 30th, I hired a murder mystery company to help create a murder mystery for the party. We picked a theme and then everyone attending had to fill out questionnaires online. The company assigned characters, sent us all kits with information and roles we needed to play (with suggested ideas for costumes). The theme was 50's Vegas stripper lounge so I made the appropriate appetizers and drinks, and the company sent us a CD with period music. There was much fun and hilarity and mayhem.

2) For my friend's [huminuhhum]th birthday, we surprised her by flying out and having a birthday happy our at our old favorite spot (my husband and I had moved away 4 years prior to that). She had no clue that we were coming and we involved her daughter, her boyfriend, and mutual friends in on the surprise. It was a celebration full of inside jokes and alcohol.

3) My friend and I spent 2 years (5 months actively) planning my husband's 35th--we surprised him with a trip to Aspen. I colluded with his boss to secretly get him the day off. We pretended to plan a non-secret birthday dinner. I had to lie, cheat, and steal to keep the secret. Morning of, we took him to his favorite breakfast spot and gave him a binder we had made that had maps of the town, highlighted different activities and places to eat, etc. The trip was a blast.

4) My friend and I have birthdays that are two weeks apart. During the middle week, we threw a party for our friends at a local cupcake & cereal shop. We rented the place out and had them make tons of mini-cupcakes of all flavors. We put 16 Candles on their flat screen TV and made an 80's music mix to play over the speakers. We swam in nostalgia and frosting. It was incredible.

When I turned 8, my parents gave me the best birthday party ever. My dad picked up the herd of kids (most of my class/grade and their siblings) and took us all down to my grandmother's farm in a great big pickup. We got ride in the back of the truck through town and all the way down to the farm. Then we went on a walk through the woods, my dad herding 20+ 8 year olds as we ran amuck like savages. Finally, just as it got dark my dad led us to a clearing where a great big bonfire was and my mom had hotdogs and sticks all laid out for cooking the hotdogs over the fire. Then there was cake.

It sounds overly simplistic to retell it, but for some reason it stuck not only in my mind as awesome, but in the minds of my friends as well. To this day, it goes down as my favorite birthday, although last year's tickets to a Monday Night Football game came a close second.
