Can someone recommend a good, trustworthy, American-car auto mechanic, preferably near my work in Berkeley/Emeryville?

The G/F uses Claremont Garage. She likes it.
She's got a Saab, but I think they'll do your Chevy.

If you haven't already been there, CarTalk.com has a database of mechanics that people have said worked for them. I believe it is entirely based on customer referral.

I've used Claremont Garage and they are nice, but very very expensive and a bit limited. They farm a lot of work out, which may be why they're so expensive.

Try the Chevron station at Ashby / Telegraph. It's the home of Inca Auto Repair. The guy who runs it is professional, trustworthy, and polite. I've been taking my cars there for a few years now. Not dirt cheap, but trustworthy is worth more in the end. As for how I know they're trustowrthy... I've taken my car in before to have it checked out, and they sometimes say "no, this doesn't need to be fixed." I've never proven them wrong on one of those, and all the repairs and work they have done for me have held up well.
