When does NJ Tpke traffic die down?

What is the best time to head north on NJ Turnpike?

Spending the weekend in Delaware. Heading home tomorrow (Sunday) and wondering if it will be beneficial to wait until 9:30 pm to leave. This will have me on the NJ turnpike around 11 or so (I think). the question is, does the beach traffic die down by then? Would there be a substantial time savings vs. leaving at 6pm? The goal is to spend the least amount of time in traffic.

Eh? The beach traffic is generally going to be people heading south in the morning. If you're heading North around the time when people leave the beach (so you'd definitely want to get off of the turnpike by 3:30-4ish), then you're going to be in trouble.

Depends on what exit you're headed to on the Turnpike. Can you say?

There's an 80% chance of rain tomorrow, so, I wouldn't bank on people leaving at the end of the day. You'll probably be good if you leave around 9:30. Just be careful, since the NJTPke is notorious for idiots getting in accidents in bad weather, especially before it splits off into the car/truck division.

Safe travels!

From my experience, rain causes folks to head back to the city mid day... eat brunch and go. If it is a nice day, everyone waits til the last minute, then pays for it in traffic.

When I spend weekends in NYC I generally shoot to head back to Philly around 8 or 9 and the past couple times this summer the traffic coming into the city at that point is totally bonkers. Also, after cruising through North Jersey with no problem I always hit this weird pocket of super heavy traffic around like exit 8, around 10pm-ish, heavy in both directions. I think you'll definitely catch a break rolling into North Jersey at 11pm, like I said as late as 8 and 9pm I've seen it totally stacked from the BQE back over the bridges all the way to the Turnpike.

ditto on the heavy traffic around exit 8.
