Trying to find a picture book, it had something to do with figuring out the clues in the book....

....in order to find some sort of object (gold, i think) in real life....i remember amazing, trippy illustrations and something about an "enigma"...maybe? any ideas? thanks!

Best answer: Do you mean Masquerade by Kit Williams?

If it isn't Masquerade check out 'The Armchair Treasure Hunt Club' website and Amazon's list of Armchair Treasure Hunts & Curious Enigmas for other suggestions.

Based on your description, I don't think this is it, but I'll toss it out there anyway as another illustrated book where you have to use the pictures to solve a mystery - Graeme Base's Eleventh Hour.

Cadbury also had something along these lines, except it was for a Faberge egg.

Mike Wilks "The Weather Works" is another puzzle picture book but I really must recommend his Ultimate Alphabet.
