Dumpling Extravaganza.....Please help me find the best dumplings in Brisbane, Australia.

Inspired by this blog entry on an amazing sounding dumpling restaurant in Sydney, I am looking to replicate their culinary experience. Fortitude Valley and Sunnybank are chock full of asian restaurants, but personal recommendations of places that have a wide variety of dumplings is what I'm after. Bonus points if the place has awesome peking duck pancakes. My taste buds thank you!

It's gonna be tough in Brisbane Pippi, I dunno if you'll get anything on par with Shanghai Nights (truly it is the shiznit, would be happy to accompany you should you ever be here!).

This said, Sunnybank is indeed the place to go (great for Viet, too). I would recommend Yong He Dumpling and Shanghai Noodle House - not as good as Shanghai nights, but acceptable. At least it was when last I went. :)

Oh I should add if you want Cantonese dumplings - you have waaaaaaay more options.

In that case, I like the yum cha upstairs in the Valley - Emperor something? something emperor? It's on the corner of Wickham and the mall.

Response by poster: Dumplings of any variety are great, so feel free to enlighten me on the finer aspects of Cantonese dumplings. I have been disappointed before by the upstairs Valley yum cha place I have been to (may not be the same one though, so will check out the speficic address). Thanks for the rec's in Sunnybank, a place with dumplings in the title seems to be a good start. Thanks and keep em coming!

Maybe not the answer you're looking for, but:

We always just buy a range of buns and dumplings from one of the larger Asian groceries, then steam / deep fry / shallow fry 'em (or a combination thereof) ourselves. They taste pretty much the same as they do in most every Cantonese / yum cha restaurant I've been to in Sydney. Get a few layers of bamboo steamer while you're there and you can have a table full of stuff done in ten minutes, including shallow frying steamed stuff for a crispy bottom, from whenever the water's boiled. Buy a roast duck with the pancakes and you're there.

Otherwise, this article says that Shangri-La Chinese Restaurant in Sunnybank is a "fantastically priced yum cha restaurant with lots of fresh dumplings". That joint in Aspley hypermarket sounds interesting too! Please post reviews here if you go.

Response by poster: DIY dumplings is definately a good idea. I have been to Aspley Hypermarket restaurant for dinner before ( as a former Hyperhole checkout chick it's almost compulsory) as I live near by - food is good, service is amazing, but will have to go specifically for yum cha on a sunday.

I make my own using a variation of this recipe. They probably wouldn't fool a Chinese grandmother, but to my palate they're just as good as those from the average Sydney dumpling shop. Shanghai Night, though, looks decidedly above-average - thanks for pointing out its existence! I sense a gluttonous dumpling night on the horizon.

I love dumplings. I love we had people who knew how to make them around here back in the states.
