Brownie War with Insulin

Looking for Websites or Recipes for Sugarfree and Low sugar desserts (especially brownies)! Would be awesome if these websites show reviews of people who have tried them!

My sister's birthday is VERY soon (like, this weekend). Her SO is hypoglycemic. Her grandfather-in-law and our mother are diabetic.

Her mother-in-law is making a sugar-free (or I'm assuming low sugar) strawberry pie.

I hate strawberries.

I want to make a secondary dessert - specifically: Brownies. I know several of the party attendees love brownies.

I would love it if you know of or have tried a good low sugar brownie option.

Please help! :)

This recipe uses brown rice syrup instead of sugar. Not sure how that stacks up carb-wise.

A bunch of chocolate recipes on 101 Cookbooks, most of them use natural sweeteners instead of refined sugar. Might be worth a look, and some of the recipes may offer a substitute sweetener.

One thing to keep in mind is that even if you go sugar-free or low sugar, flour converts to glucose (AKA sugar) in the bloodstream, so baking in general is really tricky for diabetics and hypoglycemics. Are they type 1 or type 2 diabetics? Both have different needs. I'm speaking to T2, because that's what I'm familiar with.

The best low-sugar dessert I've encountered is this sugar-free cheesecake. I've made it many times and even people who regularly eat sugar enjoy it. From the same site is this low-carb brownie recipe, which I haven't tried.

Oh, and brown rice syrup, agave sweetener, honey, etc are just alternate forms of sugar. None are really recommended for T2 diabetics. Erythritol, as used in the brownie recipe I linked, is one of two "natural" alternative sweeteners that are recommended - the other is stevia, which I hear can be challenging to bake with.

Here's one a few people reviewed and liked. Lots of recipes here for other desserts as well.

Linda's Low Carb site has a bunch of recipes including brownies, but she isn't all that crazy about her recipe yet either.

I have had really good luck substituting Splenda for sugar in baking. I use the same amount of Splenda as the recipe calls for sugar. It still has a very very slight off taste so I experimented this weekend and used Stevia (AKA Truvia) instead. It tasted awful. I'm going back to Splenda. You hardly notice the taste, really.

Also, the patent ran out on Splenda so you can now buy a generic brand for less.

Google search "Splenda Brownie Recipe"
