Best answer: IPL is different from a laser.

IPL, or Intense Pulsed Light, is essentially equivalent to someone using a bright, multiple spectrum flashbulb against the skin. It's useful for tightening skin and correcting larger discolorations, (such as age spots, sun damage or broken capillaries,) that are spread out over an area. Several companies make very good IPL machines, including Syneron, Candela, Lumenis, Genesis Biosystems and Ellipse. Here in the US, treatments are almost universally called "Photofacials."

A laser projects a single spectrum wavelength. They are typically used for "spot" treatments in small areas, and are more commonly used to correct the small capillaries on the nose which you're talking about. V Beam and Cynergy are considered very effective -- they're both "pulsed-dye" lasers.

Best answer: Also, your skin color may determine whether or not you should have an IPL or laser treatment. People with skin in the V and VI range on the Fitzpatrick Scale should speak with a physician before undergoing either procedure.
