Question: I need a free and simple online project tracker

Does anyone know of a free and simple online project tracker?

We don't need a lot of bells and whistles. The projects themselves will be simple, but there may be a lot of them.

I use PHP Collab for project tracking at work. You'd have to set it up yourself but it's better than nothing....

Also it isn't online unless you make it so. :)

There's basecamp which is very nice; they do do free accounts for a single project and unlimited users (with a really small link on the pricing page), so you could create a new account for each project, if you don't mind duplicating your account creation effort, and don't need to time-schedule stuff between projects.

-disclaimer - I work for Development Seed and use this thing daily

Open Atrium is a Drupal-based collaboration tool, which has a sweet, sweet casetracker, blog, etc. Same as PHP Collab, you'll have to install it, but it's very very quick to install and totes awesome.

Basecamp isn't free but has a 30-day free trial, the low-end plans are pretty reasonable, and 37signals is apparently profitable (a project management site is just about the worst possible thing to have disappear overnight because the VC money dried up).

Disclaimer: I'm a 37signals Backpack customer, but I'm on the way out for reasons unrelated to the product itself.

Just remembered another one; opengoo is free and opensource if you host it yourself, or you can pay for hosting.

The company I work for (Pivotal Labs) makes a product called Tracker: a hosted solution for lightweight project management geared towards agile workflows. It's free. Here's a previous comment with a somewhat more detailed introduction. It's typical application is for software development, so it may not be appropriate for your situation. For more 'general' project tracking, I've also been a big fan of basecamp, but I haven't checked out any of the open source clones that are apparently now available.
