mp3 player shopping in Vancouver

Stores (other than usual suspect big box outlets) with a good selection of mp3 players in Vancouver, BC?

While I'm at it - suggestions for ipod alternatives that work well with Linux?

No idea about stores in Vancouver, but many Creative and Samsung players (and a couple other brands I can't think of) work just like any USB key with a FAT32 filesystem and so using them in Linux is a cinch. (I have in mind the Creative MuVo V100 and the Samsung YP-C1Z, both owned by me, though both also a little outdated).

Sansa players by SanDisk work great with Amarok in Linux, or by drag and drop via USB. I got a Sansa Clip for Christmas and couldn't be happier. It was Around $40 at the time. Sorry I don't know much about shopping Vancouver ( A quick google for Sansa in Vancouver showed Frontierpc.com which apparently has a Vancouver office, but for me this type of purchase seems like a big box kind of thing to me. If I'm picking between them I tend to go with Target, just because the people I've known who worked there mostly seemed to like it (with the usual day to day exceptions) which I can't say for WalMart or BestBuy. My search also showed some available on Craigslist, so that may be an option as well.

I'll second any of the Creative MuVo players. They have the drag-and-drop FAT32 formatting as mentioned already. Caveat: Muvo models do not have the playlist feature.

Most MP3 players won't support playlists with Lnix, but with Songbird, you might be able to find a player that will sync playlists. Here is their list of players supported by songbird, however, there is no mention of Linux. . .

The MuVo models last a while on one AAA battery, however, depending on how much you use it, you might get some NiMH rechargeable batteries.
