Is the Toshiba RDXS32 DVR/DVD defective?

This is going to be extreme narrowcasting, but: People have reported that the Toshiba RDXS32 DVR/DVD recorder has a serious flaw when making DVDs -- namely, the black level is too low and everything looks washed out, making the discs only playable on that particular machine. The unit is on sale from Amazon, which I take to be an inventory reduction, meaning that these are those flawed machines ... but other reviews say the problem didn't affect them, suggesting maybe the problem was fixed along the way. Anyone know for sure? Or, does anyone want to suggest another standalone DVR w/ HDD that competes with this one in features and price ($370)?
