How the heck do people get to London City Airport?

London City Airport: Help me get there in time to catch an 8am flight on Friday morning?

I am in WC1, near Holborn and not too far from St. Pancras.

I assume I need to be there by 6am? This is a short hop to Munich.

Is there any public transport at that time? Is a mini-cab my only option?
Help!

Best answer: It's on the DLR. At that time in the morning, you can get a bus, then get on the DLR (route plan). Your check-in for a European flight is likely 90 mins beforehand, rather than two hours, so you might be able to get the Tube if you rock up at 6.30am.

I do the Lufthansa/BMI hop from London City to Munich all the time.

You only need to check-in 60 mins before departure (although I'd recommend to check with your carrier). Check-in is usually at a self-service machine so no queues to delay you. Baggage drop is really quick and you pass through security in around 15 minutes. So, if you arrived at the airport at 7 for an 8 a.m. flight you should be fine.

In terms of getting there, the DLR should be fine although I usually do a cab for the convenience.

Best answer: Oh, forgot to give details on public transport. Most direct way would be taking the Central Line tube from Holborn to Bank, interchange to Monument, switch to DLR towards Woolwich Arsenal to London City Airport.

There are some problems with the interchange at Bank-Monument at the moment due to some ongoing work there, so Transport for London recommends Central Line tube from Holborn to Stratford, switch to DLR towards Lewisham, change at Poplar to DLR towards Woolwich Arsenal to London City Airport.

Personally I'd go with the first option and if necessary leave the station at Bank and walk overground to Monument station.

You can find all this travel info at www.thetube.com.

Best answer: I've done exactly the same trip twice, starting out from Holborn and arriving in Munich. Lleyam's on the money, taking the tube from Holborn to Bank and then taking the DLR is quite painless.
LCY is a much smaller and much more convenient airport than the other London airports. There are plenty of self-service machines and no queues to speak of at the security check, so arriving an hour before departure was more than sufficient in my case.

Best answer: I've done this from Waterloo. Cab from Waterloo at that time costs about 25-30 pounds; add about 4-5 pounds to get from your house to Waterloo. ;)

You've been in London for a while, right? Have you never taken a night bus? You are aware that buses run 24 hours a day? Frankly, I wouldn't consider taking a minicab when it's a painless journey on public transport. Do you use the TFL journey planner to get around London? The DLR is a good option for your trip.

Response by poster: Thanks, I'm aware of the night buses and have taken them myself. I meant public transport in the broadest sense - that will get me to London City airport. The tube, for example, is not 24-hour. I'd like to leave before the Tube opens and, strangely, this is also the first time I've ever taken the DLR. And this is my first time to London City Airport. Also, I was seeing if there were any private options I didn't know about (a cheap London City Airport Express?)

As it happens, we will try the N242 (it runs every 20 min at that time - if we miss it we'll grab a cab to Bank) then hop on the DLR. Thanks all!
