Yet another iPhone question...

iPhonefilter: With the new iPhone imminent, I'm hoping to snap up a second-hand old one on the cheap.. what are my connection options?

iPhonefilter: with the new iPhone imminent I'm thinking there's going to be a glut of 'old' models up for sale over the next few weeks - so I'm hoping to snap one up and get an O2 SIMplicity monthly tariff deal (£19.58 per month inc 600 mins, 1200 texts and unlimited wi-fi). Sounds like a good plan, right?

Complication - I'm going to be moving to the US in September for at least 9 months, possibly longer. Is there a similar sim-only deal I can get over there without having to sign up to a long term contract? (a 2 year AT&T contract is not suitable for my situation) Ideally I'd like a minutes+text+data package, either pay-as-you-go or rolling 30 day contract like the O2 one.

Bonus question: if there is a suitable plan, can I just stick the US sim card and it will work, or will I need to get it unlocked? How easy is that?

Well, unlocking should be a breeze come the weekend — the iPhone Dev Team (the guys who do the jailbreaking and unlocking research, basically) have announced on their web site that they'll have a full software unlock for both the original-generation iPhone and the iPhone 3G out, probably on Friday.

Actually using pay-as-you-go on AT&T may prove a bit hairier, as they're apparently taking steps to make PAYG data plans… suck.

AT&T does have a pre-paid plan, though there is currently conflicting information about plans and what data plan you can have with an iPhone.
