What country are you in?

Response by poster: US, this car also seems to be photoed here but I could not find it that's I wanted it to share here with you guys, seems like GM but it is not

It's an Oldsmobile.
posted by mattbucher at 11:57 AM on June 3, 2009

Oldsmobile of some type based on the wheel logo's, but it's a funny one because the gas fill is on the passenger side.
posted by iamabot at 11:59 AM on June 3, 2009

Here's a picture of an Oldsmobile 98 with a half-covered rear wheel well. At first I thought it was an Eagle, but couldn't find a model with that characteristic.
posted by mattbucher at 12:02 PM on June 3, 2009

I don't think it's a 98 (or 88). The window frames look pretty different, and the car in the picture looks more mid- than full-size. I could definitely be wrong, though.

Damn, that's not it either...

Response by poster: I know it is tricky, but it is not an Oldsmobile either!
posted by xmradio03 at 12:09 PM on June 3, 2009

I was thinking maybe an Achieva, but that doesn't appear quite right either.

Is there something you're not telling us ?

Aren't those Buick wheel logos?

Response by poster: I do not know either

Pontiac? Buick? Cadillac Catera? Maybe a Holden or an Opel or something?

Why are you sure it's not a GM?
posted by box at 12:17 PM on June 3, 2009

Response by poster: I believe it is not an American car, but maybe somewhat coropration/colaboration with another company
posted by xmradio03 at 12:19 PM on June 3, 2009

at first I thought it was an olds aurora. Now I think it might having something to do with the Subaru/SAAB/GM/opel multi headed monsters they made.

Response by poster: I was told that from OP on another forum
posted by xmradio03 at 12:21 PM on June 3, 2009

i think it's an older mercury 'taurus', with possibly some bodywork/ aftermarket rear lights/trunk lid

I agree with MrMoonPie re the Buick logo.

I'm curious as to why you often ask this type of question.

Response by poster: On the other forum, there is a game of guessing the mysterious car, and I am having problem with this one
posted by xmradio03 at 12:48 PM on June 3, 2009

It may be an Eagle Premier.
posted by birdherder at 12:52 PM on June 3, 2009

Right off the bat, I'm going to say that's based on a Mercury Sable (US car) -- the back window wrapping around and the flat tops to the rear wheels are a dead giveaway. Also, the Sable had a wraparound rear taillight, although one completely different from the one shown here. Even the gas filler cover is in the right place, and the side mirror's placement/attachment shape (although not the shape of the mirror itself.)

Here's a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:1st-Mercury-Sable-sedan.jpg">pic.

I'll see if I can find a rear pic, too.

Ack. That's what I get for trusting live preview.

Found pic that strongly suggests it's the Ford Falcon (Australian), which is based on the Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable that I linked a picture of previously. Have an appointment though, so if nobody else figures it out by the time I get back, I'll link the pic.
posted by davejay at 1:02 PM on June 3, 2009

scratch that, the Ford Falcon has SOME of the pieces that the Sable did not, but not all (most notably the rear window) -- but I'm 99% certain it's another country's model based on the same platform as the US Ford Taurus/Mercury Sable and the Australian Ford Falcon (around '91ish.)

Yeah now that I look at that rear license plate holder, there is no way that is a US car. It's an Australian picture.
posted by mattbucher at 1:09 PM on June 3, 2009

I'm aware of that, Burhanistan. I was just providing a link and saying that the license plate is too wide to be a US car. It was confusing in the beginning because xmradio03 said he was in the US.

99% certain, and 100% wrong.

Best answer: what prompted the question, OP?

having moved to canada from australia, i miss our local cars and get a big kick out of seeing Pontiac G8s around here now (as they are made by Holden down under).

Unless I'm misunderstanding the situation, it appears that the OP belongs to another forum that has recurring 'What car is this?' quizzes/contests/whatnot. When s/he's stumped, he turns to AskMe, where s/he hands out teasing bits of information like 'seems like a GM but it's not' and 'I believe it is not an American car, but maybe somewhat coropration/colaboration with another company.'
posted by box at 4:34 PM on June 3, 2009

cmetom- I wish they'd just import some damn Holdens here in the US! They look sharp in their original forms, but the G8 just doesn't do it for me.

Perhaps a Oldsmobile Aurora... but perhaps is too small to be the Aurora.

That's a Holden VR Caprice (1994), an Australian car. More info here.
