Looking for proxy server software recommendations and other advice regarding my proxy setup.

I've decided to set up a proxy server at my home, which I access at work. My setup is based on this tutorial.

The setup works, but right now I'm using a free trial of SpoonProxy and will be looking to either purchase it in the next 30 days or would like a recommendation for another piece of proxy software that would better suit my needs. Looking for something that's cheap/free and allows 2-3 users to be connected at once. Your suggestions? SpoonProxy? WinGate? CCproxy?

Also, related to this setup, my cable line at work (outside the proxy) is running at 18 mbps and my cable line at home is running at 10 mbps. When I connect to home from work (via proxy), I get a max speed of ~1 mbps. I understand that the best I can do is 10 mbps, but is it typical to get 1/10 of that when going through a proxy? Is there any way to speed this up?

Lastly, how secure is this setup? Is there something special I should be doing to protect my setup that this tutorial doesn't mention?

Thanks!

Look in to running Squid on windows or use SSH and tunnel the traffic.

Your upstream at one of the two sites is probably capped to 1mbps.

If you're using ssh and you have complex passwords you're looking at a very secure set up, but you can always lock things down further by writing acl's and applying them to your router to limit the scope of who can connect.

Response by poster: aha - major brain fart. Of course I'm limited to my home's upload which is 1 mbps. It's a Monday :P

As for software, I recomment Analog-X Proxy....it's free, and I've been using it for years with great success.
