Why can't I transfer files over a network?

Why can't I access the C drive via crossover connection?

Two Vista systems, connected with a crossover cable. I shared the C drive, and can see it on the network, but it won't let me access it from the other computer. As a side note, it also won't let me move anything into the "public" folder even though I disabled the UAC (I also turned off password protection in the network settings, made sure both systems were "private" networks, and disabled the firewalls). I know this is probably a simple question, so thanks and excuse my networking stupidity.

Make sure the security settings on the shares are marked to allow everyone access, not just the owner

Response by poster: The permission is set to "everyone".

Best answer: Okay simple and fast fix: create a complex password, then reset the administrator account logins for both computers to it. Now you have 2 users with the same login name and password.

From either computer, login as administrator. Now you can access the hidden admin shares on the other. The format for UNC path to remote C drive is like so: \\IP_of_other_pc\c$. Type that in the run bar.

Transfer files. When done, reset passwords so they are different, remove file share on root directory, then turn your firewalls back on.
