Where should we stay in the Italian countryside for 2 nights between Rome & Milan?

A friend and I will be in Italy for a week in June. We are flying into Rome on a Monday morning and out of Milan the following Monday morning. We're staying with friends in Milan, and will probably have dinner plans in Milan on Friday night.

In between cities, I'd really like to see a bit of countryside. I'm dreaming of a B&B in a little tuscan village, but we'd be open to pretty much anthing. (My friend has been to cinqueterra). If we leave Rome on Wednesday, where should we go en route to Milan, & stay Wednesday/Thursday nights? Would like something small, but also need to get there from a train stop.....

Thanks!

Villa Cicolina, Montepulciano. Highly recommended. If you're taking the train your stop is Chiusi. If you are driving, it's off the A1.

I'd recommend Villa Bordoni although it might be a little more luxe than you're looking for. Really sweet place though. The food was amazing and they make wine and olive oil on the premises.

With heartfelt appreciation to Ask MeFi member "Meerkatty" who responded to my
Ask MeFi post last year, We were fortunate to end up finding Hotel Villa Delia in the Tuscan countryside halfway between Florence and Siena, just west of the Chianti region. It is the most fabulous place I've ever been to, exactly what I was hoping for-- Luxury in the country. Owned by Umberto, a well known (in Canada) Canadian chef/restauranteur/TV cooking show host. It is a great location for day outings to Siena, Lucca, Pisa, and the bella Chianti countryside. Food is great, staff is wonderful, rooms are beautiful, grounds are indescribable. We also had a fabulous time with the people we met there. Can't wait to return some day. Check out my review on Hotel Villa Delia . I posted a few pictures with the review, but I wold be glad to send you a lot more pictures than were possible to post on Trip Advisor..

See this which is just on the outskirts of Florence (disclaimer: I know them b/c the owner was a client of mine. No longer a client since she sold the company) and easily reachable by bus from the train station. It's a small B&B (they have just a few rooms) in the park of a villa, and a quiet, relaxing place. Feel free to mefi-mail for details.
