A dark mass, shot through with silver.

Montreal Hair Filter: Looking for a salon to cut and dye my hair. Inexpensive, but friendly and good with colour.

I have slightly wavy dark brown hair, that is all shot through with silver (I'm 23, it's genetic). I love the first part of my hair, and think the deep chocolate colour suits me. The grey, not so much. I'm not fashion confident enough to duplicate the origional at home, with drugstore dye, so I want a stylist who can help me come up with a practical soloution to the greying that's natural looking and does the least damage possible, who doesn't mind trimming my split ends without hacking off half my length, and can layer it to frame my face while, again, keeping my hair long. I'm a female, with armpit length hair and a square face.

So to recap: long hair friendly Montreal stylist with good dying skills, who won't charge an arm and a leg.

It's a dying skill.

This question is a perennially recurring one on the Montreal livejournal community. The hairdressing tag should find you some options.

Funky Toque is pretty reasonable for the trendy set, 3688 St Laurent, 514-985-2999. Call and get an estimate.

Living in Montreal, I usually check out the Montreal Mirror's most recent Best of Montreal when I'm looking for a new anything - it's based on reader polls so you know good experiences happened.

Funkt Toque: eh, I had the worst hair experience of my life at Funky Toque. They stylist gave me the opposite of everything I asked for (no bangs, no turnups, no styling products = 60s flipcut with bangs and spitcurls. SPITCURLS.) and I ended up have to get most of it cut off elsewhere. But as always ymmv.

In my experience everyone at Coupe Bizarre is quite talented, and despite the name they are very good with everyday looks. My colorist is no longer there so can't recommend her alas.

Lately I've been going to Pure with good results. They have a neat system where you pay for the level of the stylist, from junior to senior to master ($35-$90). I've had good results from all three levels but I really like being able to choose. Haven't had color done there yet though, but I'd trust it for myself.

And by the way, I've found it much harder to find a stylist who WILL cut my long hair short - most of them love long hair and will fight you if you want it shortened.

Oh! forgot an excellent colorist I know: Andrea at -St-Laurent Coiffure in the Promenades Cathédrale (right at the bottom of the escalator by the street entrance by The Bay). Phone number here.
She used to do my color (I'm also a brunette with lots of early grey) and cut, and I always looked hella hott walking out the door. Not sure if she's still there but give them a call, she does great work.
