Expedite Passport Problem [US]

I applied for an expedited passport about a month ago...but with the backlog it looks like it may not come by next week [when I have tickets to leave]

Do I have any options? Or am I just hoping that it works out?

Or, use the above link to check the status online. If the timing isn't going to work out, make an appointment ASAP at your Regional Passport Agency.

Response by poster: thanks. I set up an appointment for monday. Second question...can you use those expediters that do it in 1-2 days if you already have applied? I'm thinking my passport may have been created 1-2 days before I leave but may not get here in time.

Follow rbs's advice. Seriously. Part of their job is to sort out bureaucratic stuff like this.

Best answer: I had this exact problem back in May of 2007, and my Senator's office was not able to push anything through. (He is now in court trying to keep his seat, but he's not having much luck). I ended up going to the nearest Federal Building in Chicago and getting it in person.

Since you have an appointment on Monday, you should be handed one before the end of the day. My advice about the appointment:

-You need another "raised seal" copy of your birth certificate and be prepared to give them all the information you gave on the original application.

-You should not have to pay again, but the girl at the window next to me had to pay for something and they insisted on EXACT CHANGE in cash.

-The security guards were very threatening. "If you use your cell phone or eat or drink anything in the application room, you will be thrown out of the building and will not get your passport."

-I had a 10am appointment and was done with part one by 11:30. Then I had to come back for part two (waiting in a room for my name to be called) at 1:00PM.

-Getting the first birth certificate back from them meant I had to write them a letter, calls and emails were not accepted.

-When I got back from my trip, they had tried to deliver the original passport I ordered but I wasn't home. Four months later they asked me to return the second passport because they said I had the first one. Again I had to write a letter explaining I never got the first one and only had the second one.

So keep notes about everything. I hope your experience goes much smoother than mine.

Check out this thread which has links to other good threads. I suspect you will have success after a very frustrating day.
