sansa e280 problem

Sansa e280 problem. Corrupted files. When I turn it on, logo wipes on, holds a few seconds, fades to white, repeats endlessly. Following forum directions for reformatting, I remove battery, slide switch to Hold, connect to computer. Purple ring lights up, screen displays Shutting Down message, e280 shuts down. Alternately, I slide switch off Hold, but then it loops as described in third sentence. Sandisk tech support isn't responding. Any ideas?
Response by poster: I'm afraid I can't install Rockbox or any other firmware, because the e280 is now such a mess that it no longer shows up as a drive in Windows Explorer.

Best answer: I had a very similar problem a week ago, but I was able to use the recovery mode and reformat it. I'm going to assume you held in the record button while connecting to the computer? The screen should say right away that it's working.
If it still didn't work, you can try some of the other methods found at the Anything But iPod forums.
Frankly, I was sort of hoping I'd have an excuse to upgrade to 4 GB, considering how much less it costs than what I paid for my 2 GB model, but I guess I can't complain.

Sounds like the problem I have with my Sansa. Rooting about on Anything But iPod, it seems that it's a loose or broken daughterboard for the flash memory - haven't had time or inclination to diagnose which.

(if applicable, I understand Rockbox may not work on the "v2" versions of these players, but I use it every day on my e260)
