What software do I need to create my own animated "Did You Know" video?

What software does one use to create video's like Did You Know? or the Common-craft "In Plain English" series?

I find these videos incredibly fascinating, and would like to try my hand at creating my own. How do they do it? Thanks!

The common-craft video you linked to is a camera pointing at a whiteboard, with paper cutouts; no special software required.

The Did You Know? video is a series of illustrations, photos and screenshots with a handful of simple effects thrown in; just about any video editing software could be used to make something like that (though it'd be slightly easier to do using software designed for animation, such as After Effects, Motion, or even Flash, rather than software designed specifically for straight video editing.)

Most of the work in either video would be in creating the illustrations -- which, again, you could do with just about any design software.

Response by poster: Thanks ook, the common craft video was a poor example. So After Effects and Motion are the software typically used to generate the type of effects used in those videos, and then they're strung together using transitions in a separate program. This is helpful. Thank you!

Best answer: I should clarify, AE or Motion are two programs which could be used for that; whether they're the most common or typical ones, I've no idea. (AE, possibly, as it's been around for quite a while; Motion is much newer so is probably in less common use.) I mostly know the mac side of things since that's what I use; there are likely other options in the windows world that I'm not aware of.
