Question: Cut my hair, DIY edition

Looking for resources, sites, instructional videos, advice, or tips for cutting my own hair

I want to learn how to cut my own hair, or, alternately, teach my husband how to cut it for me. I have a shoulder-length layered haircut and would like to keep it pretty much the same, but I need to trim an inch or so off. Do you do this successfully? Do you know of any good resources to help me learn? The stuff I've found so far on YouTube and such is not very good . . . (I'm aware of this question, but it's many years old and asks about a different kind of cut, so I thought I'd throw it out there again in these dark recessionary days).

Have you considered searching for a beauty school where you can have a student cut your hair on the cheap? I assume you are from NYC, so perhaps you could check out one of these Aveda Institutes (link goes to the school website, but should give you salon information if you call).

Keeping up with the layers, or asking your husband to shoulder the ppressure seems riskier than a simple cut.

Yes, I'm aware of the Aveda Institute. And Bumble and Bumble Model Project (which is superior, IMHO, in case anyone is looking for that kind of info). But I'm looking for DYI haircutting tips. (And my husband is willing, nay, eager, to take on the task!)

For 49 cents, you can buy a used copy of the textbooks they use in cosmetology classes: Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. It covers a lot more than what you need, but surely it has instructions for basic hair cutting.
