Books about Nicaragua and its culture but NOT guidebooks?

I'm very likely going to be at interning at an organization/studying spanish at a language school in Ocatal, Nicaragua next summer for roughly three months. Can anyone recommend some solid books on Nicaragua and Nicaraguan culture? I'd really like to shy away from any sort of guidebooks, i'm looking for something that isn't for vistors or people looking for a vacation...that seems to be what the majority of guidebooks are tilted towards.

Some guidebooks are actually pretty good. I wouldn't discount them completely. You may want to look at Culture Grams.

Maybe a bit dated now, but I remember thorughly enjoying reading The Jaguar Smile by Salman Rushdie while travelling in Nicaragua - and it's not a guide book.
