What do pregnant women need but not know they want, in their first and second trimesters?

What's a good gift to get my sister who is in her first trimester? What about for her 2nd trimester? (we like to give each other gifts).

What do pregnant women need but not know they want, in their first and second trimesters? pampering is appropriate.

A pre-natal massage would be lovely for any time.
Some women love Bellabands for the first couple on months and beyond.
By the end, I was in heaven when I was swimming and hated to spend money on a maternity bathing suit but it was so worth it.
I also loved getting pedicures because I felt so ungainly and unattractive all the time but having cute toenails somehow helped me feel okay. Plus a foot massage is divine.
But pregnancy treats women very differently so it's hard to say what would be perfect for her.

FOOOOOD.

How about a gift basket of treats? No brie, shark, or booze, but I'm sure you can find something despite those limitations.

When I was pregnant I had no idea how much the exercise I was doing (lap swimming) would pay off later. Anything that you can give her to help her be strong and in-shape is worth considering. Maybe a program of water aerobics? Or a several sessions with a trainer/ yoga instructor?

and/ or

A juicer. I found that fresh lemonade/ grapefruit juice (anything tangy/ citrusy) really helped with my morning sickness.

When my sister was preggo, I gave her a gift certificate to a large "one stop shopping" department store. Later, she told me she asked herself "Now, what would the baby like? I know, the baby would like momma to have a new dress!"

So, something summer comfy for the ever-expanding waist line.

For the first trimester I think anything you can do for her would be awesome (food delivered, cleaning services, etc). A lot of women don't want food because they feel nauseous, but I was so completely exhausted I couldn't do anything but the bare minimum and I felt bad making my husband do everything for me.

Very-recently-preggo here, seconding the suggestions above-- esp. Bellaband, body pillow for 3rd trimester (Snuglis are supposed to be great), and prenatal massage. As katers890 suggests, anything labor-saving will be great for the 1st trimester.

Other ideas: some nice thigh-high stockings in her style (regular ones get uncomfortable pretty quick!). Gift certificate to a nice lingerie store-- works either for new bras/underthings to suit her changing shape, OR for fun bedroom stuff to keep her feeling sexy. Baby books of any description, but I'd recommend especially What's Going On In There, which spends a lot of time talking about how the baby's brain and senses develop month-to-month in utero.

Depending on her style, how old she is, and where you live, a gift certificate/shopping trip to Forever 21 might be nice-- they don't call it "the teenage pregnancy store" for nothing, and I found it to be a great source of fun empire-waisted, preggo-shaped clothes that weren't as boxy and dowdy as the standard maternity stuff.

Also, if she's got a partner, then anything that facilitates fun experiences for the two of them-- favorite restaurant gift certificates, movie tix, bungee jumping, whatever-- would be great for the 2d trimester, when she's feeling more like her old self. They won't have much time for couple bonding once baby arrives, so it can be good to make some memories together while there's time.

The Preggatinis book.

Just called my friend who's at 28 weeks and she said "good gawd, I wish people would knock off the pregnancy books, I already know what I need to know!" Her coworkers had a shower for her and she got like 3 of them. She said something like that Preggatinis book would be neat though. Or a massage. She also said her daughter (who's 3) is feeling a bit left out so on the off chance this isn't your sister's first kid, maybe pick up something small for the older child.
