Magento Filter: Best way to track gift card purchases?

I'm trying to find a way to track gift card purchases on a user level: meaning, associating a gift card PIN number for example with specific products purchased with that PIN, along with information like data and time purchased. What would the best way be to go about doing this?

Assuming that the gift card has its own ID/Serial, whatnot, I would assume it would be captured at the time of sale? All you'd have to do it link it to the sale/receipt.

Needs more information. Are you asking about how to do this with a system of your own design, or are you using someone else's? What hurdles have you encountered thus far in attempting to do this?
