How can I pin certain windows above others on OSX?

I couldn't live without FileBox Extender when doing freelance work on my home PC's but have to use a Mac at the day job. Are there any (free) equivalents on OS X that will allow me to "pin" some windows above others? Weeks of Googling have failed me in finding an equivalent program.

Is the "pinning" the only functionality that you need? I tried Googling FileBox Extender to see what it did, and all I could see was it had favorites and hotkeys and things, which OS X can do. For pinning, al_fresco's link could work (haven't tried it), but Quicksilver or OS X's own spotlight could help with the other functionality.
