How can I guarantee I get a domain name that is expiring on Friday?

How can I guarantee I get a domain name that is expiring on Friday and what should I do to prepare / strategize?

I have found a domain that is expiring Friday that I want to grab and have only come across old threads like:

http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=29079
http://www.webmasterworld.com/forum25/3722.htm

which explain the process of how it works...

"> Expiry Date
> Registrar Dependant
> Registrar Delete
> 30 Day Redemption Period at Registry (can be renewed by paying Registrar's Redemption Fee)
> 5 Day Pending Delete
> Delete on 6th Day
> Backorder Services (Pool/Snapnames/nameWinner/ClubDrop/GoDaddy) scramble to register the deleted domain"

A few questions (any or all of these answers would be great):

1. Does it still happen like that?
2. Whats the best domain backorder strategy once it reaches the backorder services?
3. Does it matter if I register for these services closer to the deletion or the expiry date? Will more people catch on for something to bid on?
4. Should I try to register or use the service from where its currently registered?
5. Is there one that everyone uses or should I pay/register for all of them like one of the threads suggest?

http://www.designerstalk.com/forums/domains-webhosting/37511-godaddy-backorder-scam.html talks about a GoDaddy's scam with it so I dont think I should use them.

And to avoid tasting they say that in "January 2008, ICANN proposed several possible solutions, including that the exemption on transaction costs (US$ 0.20) during the five-day grace period be abandoned, which would effectively make the practice of domain tasting not viable." Does this still happen and how should I avoid this?

Bottom line: How can I guarantee I get the domain I want while avoiding:
alerting others about it
tasting
getting ripped off
?

Thanks

Response by poster: And I found out that tucows (the registrant of the domain) "will drop the domain between day 70 to 75 after the expiration date". So thats the period of time for me to try and grab it. They further says "The Registry randomizes the drop process over a 5 day period in order to provide equal opportunity for the general public to re-register the domain"

The only way to make sure is that the owners dont buy it back usually the owners have a certain amount of time to buy the domain back after it expires.
posted by majortom1981 at 4:47 AM on April 14, 2009

Also thats if they dont have it set up for the domain to renew automatically

How to Snatch An Expiring Domain

Several years old at this point, but a good place to start.

It will be hard for you to be faster than a machine, as I learned when I built a script to constantly whois my domain on the day it was supposed to drop. Fortunately, I was only competing against myself, and GoDaddy's backordering system kicked in and grabbed it for me (for a domain name NOT previously held by GoDaddy -- which I think is the key distinction between my story and the angry bloggers' stories).

You can't guarantee it. And as you note in your first comment, the expiry date doesn't really matter: it's the dropped date you want, and you can't really know that for sure.

Use one of the backordering services, ideally one that is the same place it's registered now -- that'll have the first crack at it. If not that, then just choose one that won't charge you if it fails. You can always move it somewhere better once you have it. And then cross your fingers.

Since you want it for legit reasons, tasting doesn't apply here. Forget about tasting.

My friend had great success with the godaddy backorder service.... On the day of expiration, it appeared that something else had happened with it (e.g. friend was not first in line), but a couple of days later, godaddy had registered it to him. Parfait!

Best answer: The only way to grab the domain for certain is to BUY it from the current owners. Email them in advance, offer them what you think it's worth, and go from there.

The advice given in the Mike Industries link never worked for me simply because there are now many more domain name dealers. Nearly all unregistered domains are now bought immediately, regardless of what they are, and then flipped for as much money as possible through networks of auction sites. You are competing with vast crowds who are only looking for a quick resale for more than they paid. They do this for a living. They are better at it. They will score a fraction of a percent of all the domains they try to buy, but they will try for thousands every day.

So, to repeat: make the current owners an offer.

I've personally had a lot of luck with the GoDaddy backordering service. On three separate occasions it's worked like a charm.

Response by poster: But are we talking about using one of these backorder services for the expiring date (this friday April 17) or the 70-75 days later (June 26 to June 30)?

After loooking up the whois and finding out it was registred with tucows, I found this in their FAQ which answers this previous question, but there are people answering me with their experience on GoDaddy with the expiring date, not the drop date so I am confused.

"Here is a summary of the drop timeline:

- Domain expires and begins 40 day Grace period where a standard renewal can be made
- 40 days of grace pass, Registrar deletes the domain from their database and asks the Registry to do the same
- Registry holds domain in 30 day Redemption Grace Period
- Domain enters 5 day randomized deletion process, and redemption is no longer possible. This is PENDINGDELETE for COM/NET, and "PENDINGDELETE SCHEDULED FOR RELEASE" for others

In general the Registry will drop the domain between day 70 to 75 after the expiration date, however THERE IS NO METHOD TO DETERMINE EXACTLY WHICH DAY THE DOMAIN WILL DROP. The Registry randomizes the drop process over a 5 day period in order to provide equal opportunity for the general public to re-register the domain."

Also, @Mo Nickels, I do have all of his contact information. After a quick google stalking search :), I found out he runs a web development company that doesnt look like it has had business for a year by the resume section. I was really hoping to get it this traditional way of letting it drop and then having me swoop it up, but you are right there are plenty of people who do this for a living.....so the real question is will I pay more for the domain in a bidding war with those people when it gets dropped OR pay more dealing directly with the guy. If your answer is the latter, can you give me a good way (form letter?) or direction on how I should approach the owner so I dont get screwed as well a suggestion so I dont get screwed with the domain transferring process (like an escrow service)?

Thanks

Best answer: 1. Start simple. "I see you're not using xyz.com. I'd like to take it over. What would you accept for it?" Don't get into details until later in your discussions. I recently got one fellow to transfer a domain to me for $16. Another one, though, cost $5000. Both are for real projects, not for domain speculation on my part. If he forces you to make an offer, $200 is a good starting point. If you think you can get the domain for less than that, by all means offer less, but then you should ask yourself, "If I'm only willing to pay $20, then how important is this domain, really?"

2. Do use an escrow service. Use a legitimate one. We recently used sedo.com successfully. It will cost you.

3. Most screwing that happens with domain name transfers (because it is just a transfer--you are not really "buying" anything) are due to technical foul-ups. DNS entries are changed incorrectly or all the contact information isn't updated or one service or another requires you to jump through nearly impossible proof hoops to verify the transfer. I'd worry more about that than about getting screwed over.

I don't think this matters. When I used the backordering service, I just put in the domain name and GoDaddy did all the monitoring for me. I didn't have to specify dates at all. Hell, if I had left the site on there and it hadn't expired for another year, I'm pretty sure I would have gotten it.

Response by poster: @mo nickels, I will probably be following your directions but my only worry is that he doesnt know that its expiring and I could get a better price once it drops off and is available for everyone. and also, if I send him an email, the backordering services are completely useless because he will for sure be renewing it no matter what the outcome of our negoition is...what do you think?

Thanks to everyone for your answers. Its amazing how great this community is.

Response by poster: And another question to be thrown out there:

Is there a better escrow service than sedo (that doesnt require the auction style format). If the buyer and I have already negotiated the price/terms, is there a service to just facilitate the transaction or allow for private transactions only?
posted by msoffab at 5:38 PM on April 14, 2009

Mo Nickels is incorrect. Or outdated, depending on how you want to call it.

On March 31, 2009 "TASTING" as the domain name industry knows it - stopped. The loophole that allowed tasting, or the mass registration of dropping names and deletion of the same names within the five day Add Grace Period has been closed.

If you entered the full list of ~50k .com domain names that dropped today you would be able to register, by hand, the overwhelming majority of those names. Now, that doesn't mean that names aren't still being registered for resale, simply that investors who are doing this are being more selective.

There are tools that are being introduced by Verisign that some registrars are starting to offer to select clients - some to all paying clients - which allow you to determine if an unregistered domain name has any DNS queries. This may change the current status at some point, but thus far it doesn't seem to.

If there is a domain name that I feel anyone else may want I will do the following:

1. Determine the drop day and put that on my calendar with a reminder for five days before so I can check to make sure it is still going to drop.
2. Determine the registrar, and then to drop partner (if they have one). If the registrar has a drop partner they name will be offered there before it's allowed to drop. If they do not have a drop partner they may handle drops themselves. You have to figure that out.
3. Backorder with the appropriate drop provider or at the registrar themselves. Do this early so you don't forget. There is a small risk that someone else will see that you've backordered it and jump on the bandwagon.

If it's a domain name that I would like to have but I'm not willing to pay more than registration rates for it I will do the following:

1. On the day my reminder goes off I confirm the drop date by going to http://www.wsmdomains.com/help/expireddaily.html and downloading the drop list for the specific date and confirm that the domain name is on there. If not, I work forward and back until I find it.
2. I make sure my Name.com account has account credit in it. This will allow me to quickly pay for a name and get it registered instead of having to enter CC or PayPal information and wait for that to process.
3. I load up the bulk registration tool at Name.com a few minutes before the drop begins (2pm EST). The drop lasts for up to two hours, so I keep trying until I see that the domain name has become available. Once it has I quickly check "add to cart" then "checkout".
4. Once on the checkout page it's a couple quick clicks to select account credit as payment type, agree to the registration agreement and then submit.

You can switch out any registration provider that lets you put credit onto your account. I use Name.com because a. it's my employer, b. the search is super fast, c. I don't have to go through a million and two upsells to get to the checkout.

FlamingBore, I'm not incorrect. That's how it works. Your entire how-to is based upon the idea that one should let the domain expire which I believe is a mistake. I have had domain after domain be re-registered on the last day or during the expiry period because most domain registrars sound out many reminder emails. I have NEVER landed a domain name when I have waited for it to expire. I OFTEN land domain names when I approach the current registrant.

Also, you assume that I am doing it my way due to a fear of domain tasting. No. I'm doing it to fight domain squatting. There several domains I want that are currently being squatted by a company that refuses to sell them, ever, and won't even entertain offers. THAT'S the kind of company you're up against if you wait for a domain to expire.

I think you way will work for some domains, especially for unusual ones, but the domains that interest me are usually dictionary words.

Should be "...send out many reminder emails..."

Mo - in your initial response you state "Nearly all unregistered domains are now bought immediately, regardless of what they are, and then flipped for as much money as possible through networks of auction sites" and that is simply not true.

It's not true in part because PPC revenues have dropped dramatically in the last year so carrying a large portfolio of domain names is not for the faint of heart and selling to end users is not as easy as it appears. Tasters also factor into this. These are the people who would register "anything" no matter what it looks like - for the parking/ppc revenue. Now that they cannot drop the names that are not profitable they have to be much more selective and do a lot more research on names before picking them up.

Here is a list of the first 500 .com names dropped by Verisign (the .com registry) today. You will note that as of this moment only 16 have been re-registered.

Also - just because someone has a name they aren't willing to sell to you doesn't mean they are squatting. Is it a TM? No? Then it's not squatting. An undeveloped property is just that. Someday the right buyer will come along and it'll get developed. It may not be in my lifetime, but it will happen. Just like with land. You buy, you hold, you sell for a profit.
