Intermediate names for paper airplanes?

What did people call paper airplanes in the gap between when paper was invented and when the airplane was invented? Paper birds?

The Straight Dope has an article on the origins of paper airplanes, seems like they were called paper darts.

I've seen the phrase "paper darts" in 19th-century novels.
