NYC - Chelsea, Midtown West. Looking for a mellow place, 30-something crowd, upscale but not crazy expensive, not too crowded, and not too loud for conversation.

Flatiron Lounge on 19th between 5th & 6th is excellent on most nights, although kinda crowded late in the week.

In Chelsea: The bar in the back of La Zie (entrance around the corner from the restaurant, on 20th) is small, elegant, and friendly.

In Hell's Kitchen: The Russian Vodka Room or Casellula.

Another vote for the Russian Vodka Room. I love that place.

I also like HK and The Half King.

Response by poster: Some good suggestions, thanks. Think I'll try Russian Vodka Room, maybe La Zie next time.

Druids is a dignified bar with upscale bar food and an older, theatre-centric clientele. (Maybe too old for you, more 40s and 50s. Amusingly, a slick new kids bar opened next door and there is no. mixing. at. all.) Also Druids has a garden in the back, nice in the summer if you smoke.
